Oil Fill Capacity
« on: October 10, 2019, 08:40:22 PM »
Just swapped out the oil.

read in the manual under Top offs that it should take 3.4 l of oil for sump and filter (p291).

Put about 3.4 l in, bumped the motor, still no oil showing in the sight glass (or floor either for that matter) .

put in the last 1/2 l or so... still no oil in sight glass.  so now it has 4l.  My gut tells me to add more oil until it shows full....  but the manual says 3.4, i feel like I should trust that.

Anyone have similar experience?  How much should this thing take on an oil change?

You have got the bike vertical and not on the side stand?

just decided to check it, still low, ran it for about a minute, now it is all good.  Maybe a little too much now.  Just FYI, trust the manual.  I drained a little.

My next question was going to be have you run the bike up to running temp and then allowed the oil to settle for a few mins? Youve now done that and all is good. A little too much oil will not do any harm.

The oil level should be checked with the bike vertical, not on the center stand. If you can not do it, ask another person to help you. The bike must be running for more than one min and let the oil to settle for about 15 min to be sure.

The Ducati techs here check the oil level with the bike on the stand and cold. The difference between hot and cold is not so much but if the stand is not level across the feet it makes a bigger difference. You can check this either using a spirit level on your bench/floor or by using the tie bar on the legs of the stand.

Sounds like the OP had an airlock somewhere.
Anything more than two wheels is unnecessary.

As an oil based aside - has anyone supplied their own oil to a dealer for a service (correct spec of course!)? Because it was cost effective I bought several litres when I wanted some top up oil because I'm pretty sure it is much cheaper than the dealer will charge for the oil required during a service.
Life is not a rehearsal . . .

I was really surprised, my local Ducati dealer is very close to the online price, so I get mine there rather than the rigmarole of having it delivered  :029:

I changed my oil yesterday after reading this post. The bike was on the center stand with a shim under the front tire such that both wheels were the same distance off the pavement. I put in 2 and a half quarts and the sight glass was half full. I ran the bike for a few minutes and let it sit for a minute. Glass showed empty and I poured in the rest of the third quart and the glass was slightly above half way. I let the bike drain foe full 30 minutes both on side stand and straight up. Today I will go for a short rode and check the oil level again.
We're lost but we're making great time!
