Smart Turn Signal
« on: October 29, 2019, 01:25:42 PM »
Ill start off with a "I am always forgetting to turn off the turn signals"

Its actually a safety issue IMO.  I have had cars pull out in front of me due to my incompetence.

I have been looking for a solution.  One of which is to get a 950s, the other is https://safer-turn.com/

Has anyone tried this or have any experience with a solution?  The add on module looks a little more affordable than a whole new bike, not that I would seriously consider a new bike due to my inability to pay attention to something so simple.  On the other hand, Harley has this figured out...  so why should this even be a thing in the first place?

Sorry I can't really help with experience of those items but before you praise Harley too soon take a look at their forums which have plenty of complaints about the indicators and people wishing they kept it simple and asked the rider to cancel them.

Main problems seem to be the indicator cancelling too soon (before your turn) or not cancelling at all if the turn isn't sharp enough (e.g. a lane change). I for one would rather not rely on the bike to do such an important thing for me.

Having said that, my go-to solution to avoid the problem of forgetting was for years to just randomly hit the cancel indicator button every now and then when riding along, just in case. It still annoys me that on the Ducati that puts you into the menu options.

I love my self cancelling indicators on my 950s .  On my 950 i kept on going into rider modes with my 'habit' of pushing the reset button just to be sure...

Are you saying yours automatically cancels ever?  Ive never noticed mine to auto cancel not ever, not once, no matter what the circumstance.   I just assume it is not a feature in 2017.  To me, the fact that the switch auto centers is misleading.  If the switch stayed left or right I could "feel" if it needed turned off.  As it is, I must push it in after every use.  And no, I'm not singing praises for Harley, its just that they have an attempt at a solution, albeit, failure prone.   Perhaps something is defective on my MTS950?

The MTS950 does have self-cancelling indicators of a sort. They should turn off after some 400 metres of travel provided your speed is not in excess of X mph (I cant remember, but its probably somewhere around 60-70 mph. Its somewhere in the handbook). So, as far as self-cancelling goes, its not worth a light!

The S model does, I believe, have a self-cancelling system; Im sure owners will comment on its effectiveness.

Neil is right but the distance is 500 metres and the speed is 80 km/h (almost 50 mph).

lol, so it doese't count above 50MPH and less than 500 meters from when you hit the turn signal?

Is that a cruel joke?   :157:

Yup, right there on page 193. :211:

Its no wonder how I have never once noticed it working.     They might as well have limited it to first gear only while they were at it.  :084:

I'm going to start singing Harley praise :020:  .  At least they don't design their bikes to go over 50 mph.

After reviewing the MTS905 wiring diagram, I don't think this smart turn signal product will work, even though they claim it will.  The non-functioning auto turn signal disabling feature of MTS950 looks incompatible with not so "smart Turn Signal".

It does work on the 950.
I did think it was useless though. I tried it out purposely once just after I bought the bike but if you can't see the indicator lights blinking then you need your eyes testing !! OR not concentrating after a turn

I'm pretty observant, but it happens to the best of us. I left my blinker on going home from work earlier this week, probably for a good 2 minutes before I realised and had that 'D'oh!' moment!

I have a 950s and they turn off automatically if you make enough of a turn. Lane change doesn't cancel the turn signal. You need to be leaned over quite a bit for it to register. Also, it keeps indicating for 3-4 seconds after you've completed the turn.  Overall though I do like the idea and the system isn't bad. Could use a bit of fine tuning on that one but hey it's a luxury.
