Modern bike systems are capable of detecting a blown bulb. I've not had one blow on a Ducati but my BMW used to flash up "Light out" or something. So if Ducatis system is a flashing blue light then it makes sense.
Detecting the current drawn by the lamp is an easy way to tell if the lamp is working, An LED lamp will certainly draw less than a halogen lamp, so if the current drawn drops below the threshold for blown lamp detection then it does make sense. Easy way to tell would be to put the old lamp back in again and see if the flashing blue stops.
It shouldn't cause any damage because you're drawing
less current. However I'm not a Ducati mechanic!
