Oil consumption
« on: September 03, 2018, 04:12:48 PM »
Hi folks, I've just returned from a 2500 mile trip around Europe and I've noticed my multistrada is using nearly 1L of oil per 1000 miles, it had only 1400 miles on the clock when I set off, Ducati say this is within the tolerance, what you think?

It's the tolerance of 50 years ago.  I've done 2,000 km. Since first service and consumption seems to be zero.

Ive used about 1 litre to top-up over some 16000 miles. Your consumption seems to be rather excessive.

8,800 km on mine now with absolutely no usage whatsoever,  I did change oil and filter at 7,500 because I think 15,000 km is too long for a motorcycle. I have never had a car or motorcycle that used a liter of oil in 1000 km, it must be leaking or smoking like an old Yugo! I can't believe the dealer said that is acceptable.

If you're saying you put 2.5L of oil in the engine during your trip round Europe I would say that was well excessive and cannot believe Ducati say that's within tolerance. 250ml would be more reasonable.

Mine does use oil but I'm still on my original top-up 1L bottle and the bike's well over 12,000 miles. In fact if the service intervals were at the old 6,000 mile I probably wouldn't have topped her up, just let the service take care of it.
Anything more than two wheels is unnecessary.

I've done 3,000 miles (including 1,800 hard-riding round Europe) since my run-in service, without consuming a drop.

Obviously there is a difference between "normal" and "within tolerance" but the consumption you are talking about certainly sounds excessive to me. Did you really use 2L of oil on your tour?

I imagine it's a tough job convincing Ducati though, unless there is other evidence of a problem (smoking, or leaking).

Wow. That's definately not normal and surely Ducati can't agreed that 1L of oil per 1000mile is within tolerance !!
I would not accept that.

I honestly have only slightly topped up mine after a run to Assen late June this year. Maybe 50ml. That's the 1st time I noticed it off the max line in the viewing window when on the axle stand. I've now got 8300 miles on the clock from new.

I hope you are not checking it and filling it on the side stand 🤔

I'm also interested to know what oil you put in on your travels. The correct oil is like getting hold of rocking horse sh#t and not many garages sell it.

Hi Guys

Bike was always checked on the centre stand and the nearest oil to 15w-50 I could get was 15w-40 so not a million miles away ( but easier to find a set of hens teeth in Spain/France)
Before I started trip oil was checked ( topped with15w-50) and was bang on the upper level, just checked total miles and its 2500 for trip, checked oil bottle and I added 1L (sorry my initial calculation was wrong) but I still think oil consumption is on the high side
