How to insert Images into Posts

1242

There are 3 main ways in which images can be added to posts:

1. Embed images from your pictures in the Photos Gallery (recommended option)
2. Attachments
3. Embed images from an external source (not recommended)

1. Embed from the Photos Gallery

Firstly get the BBCode…..

To do that go the the Photos Gallery, simply find your photo and click on it so that it fills the page.

Then scroll down and you’ll see some bbcode links. Click on the “Copy” button to the right of the link (see below)

Once you have copied that link (as in image above), it’s back to the forum where you need to paste it into your forum post.

Compose your post and at the appropriate point paste the link on a new line and ensure that there are blank lines both above and below the link. You do not need to surround the link in any additional code, the img tags in the copied code will suffice.

That’s it !

Now ensure you’ve finished the rest of the text for your post. When you finished save your post by clicking on the “Post” button (bottom right) and your Photo Gallery image will automatically appear in your post.

When you view the post the image will appear where you placed it. If the image has very large dimensions then the forum software may well resize it so that it fits the page.

Summary:

Image Max size 5Mb

Very easy to embed images into posts.

Photos kept in single place which you can personalise. Create albums and move images between them.

Images automatically backed up into secure cloud repository.

Images served over secure https via multiple edge caching servers.

Image EXIF information retained and accessable.

Also see How to upload images to the Photos Gallery which also has details about joining and personalising your Photos Gallery area.

2. Attachments

When you “attach” an image to a post you are basically uploading an image that you have on your computer/device to the forum. Once uploaded, that image automatically gets linked to the post you are composing and it appears as a “thumbnail” beneath the post. When you click on the thumbnail the full image appears.

How do I do this….

When you are composing your post you’ll see a “Choose File” button beneath the composition window. Click on the button and browse to the image on your computer or device.  However note any restrictions around maximum file size which is mentioned beneath the button (see below).

Once the file is selected it’s name will appear. Click on the “more attachments” button if you wish to add additional files. Use the “Clear Attachment” button if you picked the wrong file and wish to choose another (see below).

That’s it.

Now ensure you’ve finished the text of your post and when happy click on the “Post” button to submit the post. Once you hit the button your file will begin to upload. Obviously if it is a large file and you are on a slow connection then it may take a few seconds.

When you view the post the attachment will appear beneath it as a “thumbnail” (see example below). If you click on the thumbnail in your post the image will expand accordingly.

Tip: If you have lots of images and they exceed the total size restriction, then post what you can and then repeat immediately with a subsequent post.

Summary:

Image Max size 1Mb

Fairly quick to add images but you have no access to the image once uploaded.

Image EXIF information removed during upload.

3. Embed from an external source

To embed images from an external source your images are basically hosted somewhere else. This could be via a 3rd party image hosting service such as Flickr, Instagram, Imgur, Dropbox, to name but a few. Some of these service are free and are supported by advertising, others are paid services with extra features.

If you decide to use one of these services we would suggest you choose one that offers hosting over a secure https url and not http.

Note that Photobucket do not provide secure hosting and we do not recommend them.

Once you have uploaded your images on your chosen providers website you need to obtain the “direct URL” to the image you want to embed within your post. Most providers have a “Share” button (or similar) next to your uploaded image which will give you this link.

Once you have the link copy it. Now it’s back to the forum where can compose your post as normal. Choose a point in the text where you wish to insert the image. This needs to be on a new line, preferably with a blank line above and below.

When you are happy with the insertion point click on the “img” tag button (see below).

img tags now appear

Now paste your copied link between the two tags as per the image below.

That’s it.

Now ensure you’ve finished the text of your post and when happy click on the “Post” button to submit the post.

When you view the post the image will appear where you placed it. If the image has very large dimensions then the forum software may well resize it so that it fits the page.

Summary:

Services vary between image hosting companies.

Images can be deleted if you do not use service regularly.

Premium paid accounts are usually available.

Some services (like Photobucket) do not use secure connection. Can be painful to use especially with ones who use extensive advertising to fund their service.
