Change engine oil and filters Multistrada 950 - DIY

    OK guys,
didn't find any "how to" in the Net, so I'm doing this post, to make it easier for you, and don't mess any part of the engine components.

    so:
step 1: remove the plastic engine protection (5 allan screws) be careful for the washers don't lose them every bolts has one, the bigger bolts have a inner guide washer.

step 2: warm up you engine, so the oil can be more fluid and drain better - 60º on the indicator is fine.

step 3: remove oil filter (very easy to do) just need an ordinary oil filter remover, after released, just use your hand to unscrew, lot of oil is going to drain for that zone, continue to unscrew until it come off (it is going to be slippery so hold well, to don't spell oil all around  :164:

now the oil filter is removed - image bellow - nº1

Note: Be careful, my Ducati dealer tighten stupidly the oil filter, that when I made the first oil change, the oil filter came off with the lock-nut bolt of the engine, this was a major issue because attached to this part, is a oil pressure plate that must be in a specific place, if this happen you have to ask for mechanic help, keep that in mind (this happend to me, doesn't mean it will happen to you), just to prevent you from damage your engine, remember "The oil filter screw is FEMALE and the engine is MALE", like the photo above, like any motorcycle.
This note, is why I like to do my maintenance, to be sure that I'm riding in a safe vehicle. (car or motorcycle) like the saying "if you want the things done properly do it yourself" (if you have some knowledge, of course, this is serious)

step 4: remove the main drain oil bolt, is a allan bolt shown on the image below, with the number 2, unscrew that, when released, unscrew with your hand, carefully to avoid going to the oil bucket and let it drain completely, this bolt has a washer, must come off with the bolt, if not, check if is stick to the engine side.

Image bellow shows the main oil drain hole (nº 2) and the net filter reservoir (nº1)

step 5: remove the Net Filter cover is the big 14 allan bolt (nº1 on the image above) it has an aluminum washer (clean it)

step 6: remove the net Filter is a 17 allan plastic bolt, and inspect the O-ring

    the result it this:

The image at the bellow shows the cover bolt (nº2) and the net filter(nº1).

step 7: Verify and remove debris on the net filter and on the main oil engine blot (that have a magnetic part) use a power magnet to catch the tiny particles of metal debris, this debris are usual on Ducati, mainly when is a new engine (20.000kms) and because of the false neutrals on the gearbox, and how you place in the right UPPER gear   :169:

step 8: All well drain, the engine with the oil filter uses 3,4lt 15w50 (defers from the weather in your country or state) always use a full synthetic oil, it is not necessary to use the Shell brand, if it match or goes over the specs it is great.
so lets start to put all has it was, starting with the oil filter.

step 9: Fill the oil filter with the new oil, this could take a while, because it is going to soak, so fill until your patient goes  :001: and install by hand (use a bit of oil on the rubber seal O-ring, tight the sucker by hand until you can't, then use the oil filter key and tight half a turn. oil filter in place

step 10: Put the net filter in place by hand, fill it screwing  :007: :015: and then use the 17 allan key to tight the net filter by hand (the torque is from 36 to 42Nm meter - low torque, if you don't have a torque key think you are tightening with a screwdriver and when it reach the end just give a extra hand power and it's done)

step 11: Put the 14 allan big bolt cover (torque is 40 to 46 Nm - which is a low torque, don't judge the size of the bolt for is power)  :016: place it by hand, do the same has I explain for the net filter, but a bit extra more. (I strongly recommend you to by a torque wrench, this aluminum engines and bolts must be use with care)

step 12: Put the main oil engine bolt and for this I couldn't find any torque specification, so use a small ratchet wrench, insert it by hand (all bolts must be inserted by hand to avoid ruin the screw thread) and when it stops, put your hand on the top center of the SMALL ratchet wrench and give it a go, and its done

Note: you can re-use hall the engine washers (3 to 4 times) with no problems and O-rings (if they are still in round shape and not peeling). I do track days, and enduro cross, change oil every years for the track and for the enduro 3 to 4 time a year and the washers and the O-rings are the same. just saying  :015:

step 13: every thing in place, go on and put the oil in the engine (don't have a picture, but if you came this far you know where it is  :008: :001: fill until is over the max (because you have to start the engine, to fill the oil engine circuit)

step 14: Start your engine (don't forget to put the oil cap  :001:, let it work for 1 minute, turn it off and put the oil measure on the max line, if it goes a little more, no problem, there is a safe margin  :016: , put the oil cap in place, clean all the oil spread on the engine exhaust, etc.

Step 15: Put the plastic engine cover, don't go hard on the small bolts, :016:, and rock'n'roll, you just save 75% in your wallet and you know, that was drained well, the oil and the net filter are not over tight or lose.  :062: the oil is the One you bought.  :002:

    Ride hard but safe

... ride to live, live to ride ;););)

SELF RESPONSE. The filter don't came with the connector  :062: Anyway, the pressure plate, has a correct position fixed by two bits that keeps the plate in rigth place.  :152: There's no way mount it wrong.

    Very nice tutorial

step 14: Start your engine (don't forget to put the oil cap  :001:, let it work for 1 minute, turn it off and put the oil measure on the max line, if it goes a little more, no problem, there is a safe margin  :016: , put the oil cap in place, clean all the oil spread on the engine exhaust, etc.

Regarding the safe margin, I would like to make it sure it sure that if I am still on the safe side.
Mines just a bit more then yours according to the shared picture and the dealer has replaced the oil, I checked it with the dealer again and told me that it is ok still in the safe margin and also informed me that the angle of the center stand is not that correct and controlled it on tires by levelling the bike and it was more ok
    Many thanks
