How do you check your oil level?

I know, it’s a stupid question but it seems I have been doing it wrong for many, many years (ok I’m 72). I’ve always put the bike on its centre stand, if it’s had one, or a paddock stand if not to check the oil. I’ve now been told by a Ducati dealer that’s wrong, the bike should be on both wheels. Well, of course, that makes checking oil levels on your own difficult, but it also makes me wonder why anyone would want a centre stand if not for that!

Center stand is fine as long as bike is level.

Thanks, that’s what I thought, but the level does drop considerably with both wheels on the ground. Whereas on the stand the oil completely fills the sight glass, it’s only just above halfway with both wheels on the ground. Oh well, never too old to learn!

I put the bike on the center stand and but a piece of plywood under the front wheel of the proper thickness to make both wheels equal distance above the ground.
We're lost but we're making great time!
