Is this a sign of leaking brake fluid?

I've done a search and read the thread about some folk having brake fluid reservoirs replaced and wonder if the state of mine indicates something amiss?

I've had the bike 3 years or so, its a 2017 and the brake fluid reservoir cover has always looked like this. The bike was serviced last summer and I was told it was nothing to worry about. Brakes seem okay (back brake is next to useless but was ever thus) and the condition doesn't seem to be getting worse, just a bit unsightly - maybe a previous brake fluid fill was a bit sloppy?

Have you ridden the bike in the winter? Looks to me like corrosion due to road salt.
    Kind Regards,

Dill - nothing to worry about as long as there is no current sign of leakage  - mine's very similar on a 2017 model . Just sloppy fill by the dealer

Nope, but I can see why you'd say that. It's just generally fine weather riding. Nowhere else on the bike looks like this, just the brake fluid reservoir cover.

Thanks - suspected as much. May replace it if/when I sell the bike as it looks a bit of a mess, but still seems secure.

At a guess, a mechanic put it back on with their hands covered in brake fluid and didn't wipe it down afterward. It is structurally sound but unsightly, you should be able to get a replacement for twenty quid or so.

Looks like a winter project to me a good rub down and a can of black aerosol will sort it out
