Engine Management Light

Hi all,

My engine management light is permanently on however, the bike is running absolutely fine 

I've got it booked in on Saturday to have it looked at. Dealer (over the phone) reckons it could be the dreaded sticky exhaust valve... they've had a couple of these recently.

I'll keep you posted once its been plugged in and diagnosed.

Hoping this sticky exhaust valve isn't turning in to a common problem for us Mutley owners.

I'd put money on it. It's a common problem to all bikes with exhaust dampers fitted. They didn't even fix mine, just took it out because they said it would eventually go wrong anyway

Has it made a difference to the noise level at low revs. I remember disabling the exhaust valve on a Fireblade but couldn’t live with the noise at tickover so enabled it again.

I think it did yes, but not that much. Mind you I fit ear plugs as soon as I start the engine. Next door use me starting the bike as an alarm clock, so when I went to work an hour early the other day they went into a panic 
Apparently that's why the damper is fitted in the first place, to get the bike through noise metering at type approval.

Will it still pass the new level MOT with increased standards if the butterfly exhaust valve is disconnected?

You’ve got a few years to puzzle that one out

That was my thoughts when they said they were going to do it. I'll probably have traded it in by then.
Anyway the mechanic said MOT noise tests are lower than type approval and it would be OK. I don't think they can apply new rules retrospectively to bikes that were made before the change - otherwise a lot of Harley riders will be grounded

agreed cannot apply retrospectively, however the machine has been changed and it should be as manufactured.
