SW-MOTECH ALU-Rack with Givi Monokey Topcase Adapter

I installed a SW-MOTECH ALU-Rack with a Givi Monokey adapter to the rear grab bar today.  I ordered this from Twisted Throttle, and selected the match for the Multistrada 1200 Enduro.  I have this same mounting system for a top case and panniers on my 2013 Tiger Explorer.  It has held up well after 4 years and 40,000 miles, so I have faith in the brand.

The rack clamps on to the rear rail with supplied hardware.  It includes a solid bracket and fastener on each side which mates up to an existing bolt hole in the bottom of the rail.  Install took about 30 minutes.  I used a light threadlocker on everything.

I was concerned when I placed the order that the mounting pieces would obscure the rear brake light.  I was relieved to discover they do not.

I added their available Givi Monoky Quick Release adapter so I could make use of my existing cases.  The adapter can easily be removed with a quarter turn of three, spring loaded connectors.

    The 33L Givi Trekker

    The 46L Givi Trekker

Overhang has me thinking I'll be travelling light.  But the big box is nice for securely storing my helmet out of the elements.

If you are interested, check out the specs and pricing at http://www.twistedthrottle.com/sw-motech-alu-rack-to-fit-many-top-case-styles-for-ducati-multistrada-1200-enduro-16.

I have a question, as I am also looking to do the same with a top box.  It looks like you need to have BOTH the Motec rack AND the Givi monokey adapter for this to work with the Givi Monokey box.  I see on the Motech site the rack alone is $260 +/-.  Does the Givi adapter come with the Monokey Givi box, or something you have to buy separately? I thought I'd save some dough going with a top box and a waterproof duffle for touring instead of panniers, but this top case system is not looking cheap either.  Thanks in advance!

Yes, you need to have both the rack AND an adapter.  The adapter is a rigid polymer plate, also available from SW-Motech.  When I purchased the ALU rack, it was a selectable addition for about US$41.  It is shown in the fourth picture of my original post.

My Monokey cases did not come with this adapter plate.

Thanks for the info. I've purchased the alu rack and adapter and i'm waiting. Cause the manufacturer have a retailer in Spain is not possible buy it directly from SW Motech and the retailer don't have it in stock then i must wait for 15 days. Later i think i will mount a V56 Maxia 4.

    Sorry for my english.

Hm, that kinda sucks that you need both, if the adaptor from GIVI is required anyway, I don't get why it does only half the job... Plus it adds pain to injury that the ALU RACK is so pricey.

Given from previous posts: to use a Givi top box you have to buy to make a top box fit a
1 SWMotech Alu Rack at £180 from SW Motech site
2 Givi Monokey adaptor, £88 from Sportsbike
3 then there is the cost of the top box, a similar one to the Ducati is £156
This brings the total to £424 (I am ignoring the £98 colour matching covers (see point 5)
The Ducati Top box kit (by kit I assume it will bolt straight on the bike and the adaptor plate is included?)
    OR
4 buy Ducati rear alu luggage rack £202 then the top box at £156 from Sportsbike
This brings the total to £358
5 using the Ducati rear Alu rack may allow a wider range of top boxes?
I hope I have understood correctly re the  cases and fitments check for yourself before buying or please let me know where I have gone wrong

The rack looks like a better option than the universal Givi plate that I used, but the universal plate still works just fine. I have a V47 Givi top box. The heavy duty ties are just for extra insurance! The plate is around £30 https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/206858

WOW...that looks like a very economical option.  However how stable is this solution?  From the photos, it looks like less than half of the monokey plate is supported?

Thats a good question. I have been using it for several weeks now and depending on what goes in the top box, I check the bolts quite often. So far no issues - you will notice the large cable ties as extra insurance! So far not a problem to hold bits and pieces and laptop in its case. The proper rack would be a better solution but what I've got seems to work fine.
