Ducati MTS950 Workshop Manual

I have been once again been trying to find out if there is any likelehood of a Ducati MTS950 Workshop Manual being made available to customers.  I still find it crazy that Ducati don't even provide service item bolt torques in the owners manual (eg rear wheel spindle).  For me, this reduces my enjoyment of the Bike, as once the warranty expires, I plan to do most of the servicing and any repairs myself, where I can.  With first MTS950 models now approaching the end of their warranty, I am sure I am not on my own in this matter.  So, I sent an email to Ducati -  response below:

We inform you that the individual components of a motorcycle are developed within the technical design of the bike itself. Ducati therefore discourages any modification or repair by a non professional and well trained Ducati dealer that could compromise the approval and safety of the motorcycle and therefore does not provide information about the manufacturing materials / dimensions or Model Year * of specific components or of the bike itself.
 
We therefore inform you that our sales and official assistance network has the technical skills necessary to provide you with advice and support. Finally, we remind you that in order to guarantee the proper functioning of the bike and above all the driver's safety, Ducati recommends to carefully follow the instructions given in the Use and Maintenance booklet and in case of doubt or for any other thing not mentioned on the it to directly reffer to an official dealer.

I have replied to the above email with the below:-

Hello Francesca,

Thank you for your email.

I find the Ducati response very strange, and rather arrogant, since your major competitors are happy to provide (for example) the required torque settings for service items, as many people are competent home mechanics, and will service the motorcycle themselves, once the warranty expires.  BMW list all such information in their owners manual, as do Triumph.  Most models from those manufacturers also have workshop manuals available from companies such as Haynes in the UK, and they will also sell their OEM workshop manuals to their customers, unlike Ducati.

It is crazy to suggest that we should take our Motorcycles to a Ducati dealer just to adjust the chain – most of us are more than capable of doing this work ourselves, yet the main rear wheel nut torque is not even specified in the owners manual?

If Ducati fail to readily make available workshop manuals, then to my mind they are fundamentally misunderstanding their customer base, as this lack of information reduces my enjoyment of Ducati Multistrada 950 ownership, as once the warranty is expired, I plan to do much of the maintenance work myself.

I would suggest that Ducati reconsider this position, as otherwise, it will significantly influence my next choice of motorcycle, which will not be a Ducati, if this situation continues as it is.

A well scripted reply from your good self in response to a most bland and uninformative script from Ducati, however the cynic in me thinks you might be pee'ing in the wind...

I agree - unlikely to get anywhere, but at least they have the feedback - up to them what they do with it!  Will post any reply I get back, but don't hold your breath.....

I also contacted Haynes, thinking they may be planning a Multistrada manual (1200, 1260, 950 Enduro) but alas, no plans.

Ducati Italy phoned me today - all very polite, but no progress on the above topic.  They did assure me that the matter would be raised with Ducati for further discussion, but tha'ts about it.  Good they bothered to call, but it seems they are more focused on our "safety", insisting on qualified dealer servicing and repairs throughout the motorcycles life.  I understand we now live in a more legalistic age, but this is daft, especially as manuals for other models ARE available.  Anyway, getting bored now, lost interest.....

There doesn't seem to have been any Haynes Ducati manuals for some years. I suspect Ducati's attitude and lack of support may have something to do with it.
It does seem ridiculous that Ducati won't provide even basic technical details to allow home mechanics to perform routine maintenance. Surely information to support things like fluid/filter changes, and drive train and brake maintenance ought to be available to owners. Very short sighted attitude from Ducati.

I have the Ducati workshop manual for the 2015 Hypermotard which has the same engine as ours. It’s a hefty pdf, 963 pages and 311mb. Anyone is welcome to have it but I haven’t a clue how I’d get it to you as we don’t have a files section on the forum

I have heard some horror stories of people trying to do the Desmo service and loosing, so I have some sympathy with Ducati's position. Mind you I think they've gone to the other extreme. Given time I'm sure someone will find a way to get the workshop manual out there.
Also it does expose the lie to the "round the world" pretensions of the bike. Getting it to a local dealer is not exactly going to be easy from the back of beyond
